Arthur was the son of George Washington Henderson Sr and Elizabeth Ann Tomlinson Henderson.
Arthur studied at Washington and Lee College in Virginia. Upon graduation, he returned to Henderson Hall where he joined his brothers in farming and raising Standard Bred Trotting Horses.
Like his brothers, Arthur was actively involved in the community, serving on the boards of several organizations. He was also a director and the president of the Williamstown National Bank.
Arthur’s first wife, Margaret Virginia Henderson, died of tuberculosis in 1878. His second wife, Olinda McIntosh, was the sister of Anna Rosalie Henderson, Arthur’s sister-in-law. The couple would have five children, two of which died very young.
